A key focus at the event was placed on hydrogen as a cornerstone of future energy systems. Meiko Neumann, Managing Director of cruh21, took the stage in the expert session “Systemic Energy Transition – The Path to Lower Saxony’s Energy Future”, where he presented tangible findings and recommendations from a current hydrogen infrastructure planning project in Southern Lower Saxony. He was joined by Dr. Peter Oswald of the SüdniedersachsenStiftung.
Regional Scenarios – Concrete Pathways
Their presentation addressed a fundamental question:
"How does hydrogen reach future large-scale consumers – from the core network through to the local distribution level?"
Various transformation scenarios and infrastructure approaches were outlined, based on demand projections through to 2045. One central finding: regional hydrogen demand could rise to 5.5 TWh per year, with many businesses classified as "technology-open customers" – facing investment decisions between electrification and hydrogen use.
cruh21 developed the project in collaboration with partners such as Fraunhofer ISI. The result is a data-driven foundation for regional and political decision-making in hydrogen rollout and infrastructure development.
Hydrogen Needs Infrastructure – and Strategy
"The energy transition is decided on the ground – and it needs real plans, not just visions," Neumann emphasized. As an innovation consultancy for energy and a subsidiary of Drees & Sommer, cruh21 contributes not only strategic and technical expertise but also in-depth knowledge in permitting, project coordination, and implementation – from concept to commissioning.
A Platform for Action and Dialogue
We thank the State of Lower Saxony – especially the Ministry for Economic Affairs, Transport and Construction and the State Chancellery – for organizing this outstanding event and for offering a platform for real-world project insights and strategic exchange.
