Final Conference of the H2Mare Flagship Project – Offshore Hydrogen and Power-to-X in Focus

At the center of the discussions was the question of how offshore wind turbines can be directly coupled with electrolyzers to produce green hydrogen and derivatives such as methanol directly at sea.

The advantages are clear:

  • Cost efficiency: direct use of offshore wind energy without additional transport losses
  • Grid relief: reduced stress on electricity grids through immediate conversion into molecules
  • Space potential: leveraging offshore areas for direct Power-to-X production

Research Highlights

Projects such as H2Wind, OffgridWind and PtX-Wind have exemplified the innovative strength of offshore hydrogen development – from adapting electrolyzers to maritime conditions, to new offshore plant technologies, and to direct Power-to-X production at sea.

As a project partner, cruh21 supported H2Mare in the areas of interface communication, knowledge transfer, and acceptance management. With experts such as Verena Hertzsch, we ensured that the results were not only scientifically sound but also strategically and socially impactful.

The H2Mare project demonstrates that offshore technologies are a key enabler for achieving Germany’s and Europe’s energy targets. The coupling of offshore wind turbines with electrolyzers at sea opens up new opportunities to secure a sustainable, reliable, and cost-efficient energy supply.
